Melrose DPW Releases 2022 Calendar of Collection Events

The Melrose Department of Public Works has released its calendar of special collection events for 2022. During these events, Melrose residents may bring designated items to the DPW’s Recycling Center & Operations Facility at 72 Tremont Street on the dates indicated below, generally Saturday mornings.

The schedule for 2022 is as follows:

January 8: Post-holiday recycling

April 9: Motor oil/anti-freeze/gasoline.

May 14: Paper shredding.

June 4: Spring Swap Day (City Hall Parking Lot)

June 11: Scrap metal collection

June 25: Household hazardous waste (HHW) collection in Stoneham (usually at Stoneham High School on Franklin Street; stay tuned for updates).

September 17: Motor oil/anti-freeze/gasoline.

October 1: Fall Swap Day (City Hall Parking Lot)

October 15: Rigid plastics

October 22: Household hazardous waste (HHW) collection in Melrose.

November 5: Pumpkin composting.

The following items will be accepted at all Saturday special collection events except on HHW collection days: screens (TVs, computer monitors, laptops) with a charge of $20 each; metal goods ($25 per item); tires ($2 to $8 per tire); compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs); books; clothing, mercury items, and dried latex paint.

For the HHW collection events, please note that there is a fee, which will depend on how much is to be dropped off, based on a volume and weight estimation by a professional with the contracting waste management firm. We strongly advise Melrose residents who are planning to bring items on the June or October HHW collection days to check out DPW’s instructions on what to bring and what not to bring (https://www.cityofmelrose.org/trash-recycling/pages/household-hazardous-waste). We also strongly advise residents to bring their checkbooks and pay for the service with checks made out to the City of Melrose.

Also, please note that latex and other water-based paints (e.g., “acrylic”) are NOT accepted on HHW collection days.
