Sustainable Saturdays Event Series

THANK YOU MELROSE FOR MAKING SUSTAINABLE SATURDAYS 2022 A HUGE SUCCESS. Each Saturday inspired great conversations, ideas, and actions about how to live more sustainably in our day-to-day lives. And, the partnership that became The Loop Melrose started with a conversation at the August event.

While we aren’t able to repeat this event series in 2023, please check out the event list below, learn more about the resources offered, and reach out to zerowastemelrose@gmail.com with any questions.

About Sustainable Saturdays

In 2022 Zero Waste Melrose hosted a new event series, Sustainable Saturdays, to provide practical guidance to help Melrosians reduce their environmental impact in day-to-day living. From May - September 2022, these monthly events were held at the YMCA’s corner park, adding yet another reason to visit Melrose’s vibrant Main Street.

“Through our Sustainable Saturdays series, we aim to inspire conversations and encourage small, attainable actions that lead to a more sustainable planet for generations to come,” said Sustainable Saturday’s co-organizer and Zero Waste Melrose member Leah Valley Fisher.

The 2022 event schedule included:

May 21st - Composting - Anyone can compost–and we’ll show you how. Take a pledge and enter a chance to win a six-month subscription to Black Earth Compost!

June 18th - All Things Gardening - Get answers to your gardening questions from our expert grow-native gardeners, learn about mushrooms, and how to combat invasive species in your yard. Shop the pop-up store for native plants from Oakhaven Sanctuary, North Reading’s native plant nursery.

July 23rd - Sharing and Lending - Discover lending and sharing resources in our community, everything from tools, toys, to baby products and the Buy Nothing initiative. Melrose’s own local business The Toyary will host a drive this week to add to their collection and their affiliated nonprofits. If you prefer to schedule a pick-up, swing by to get on the pick-up list!"

August 20th - Repair and Re-use - Join us this week to learn about resources in your own home and out in the community to give old products new life! The Melrose Ped/Bike Committee will be on hand to offer 15-minute bike tune-ups.

September 17th - Zero Waste Products - Cut back on the single-use plastic in your home! Learn why we need to reduce plastic packaging, and check out the pop-up shop from Trove Green Provisions, a zero-waste store located in Medford MA.

To highlight the event series and bring more public art to downtown, Zero Waste Melrose collaborated with Follow Your Art Community Studios on a mural located at the event site at Melrose YMCA Park.

“The mural aligns with our goal to put more focus on sustainability in our daily lives. We’re also proud to support the vibrant arts community in our city,” said co-organizer Jeana McNeil.

Zero Waste Melrose thanks Eastern Bank Foundation and Wakefield Cooperative Bank for supporting the mural project and Sustainable Saturdays!
